The event was held in conjunction with the 2019 Women’s Week. Representing only three per cent of the entire profession, there are currently only 29 Female Registered Surveyors within New South Wales. The event aimed to help address the lack of diversity within the profession, and to help encourage young girls and women to consider a career in surveying.
Female senior high school students were invited to join Consulting Surveying firms from around New South Wales for a day in Sydney to develop a better understanding of the surveying profession.
The students and volunteer surveyors started off the day by visiting the recently opened Hyde Park ANZAC Memorial. The Memorial features the historic soil collection memorial program which was collected by public volunteers, and NSW state and commercial surveyors.
During the lunch, Barker Ryan Stewart hosted and shared a table with five of the students. This allowed our surveying team the opportunity to discuss with students the integral role surveying plays in any spatial process or project. They were also able to provide advice regarding surveying as a possible career option.
Following from lunch, a panel of representatives from the University of Newcastle, University of NSW, University of Southern Queensland, and TAFE outlined the various study pathways leading to the surveying profession.
The event was a great opportunity to highlight the importance of gender diversity within the profession, and to help encourage young girls and women to consider pursuing a career in surveying.
