Ten years ago, Glenn Barker, Garry Ryan, and Ian Stewart got together and decided that pooling their skills and forming a team would enable them to offer end-to-end consultancy services for property development and infrastructure projects. As Barker Ryan Stewart, Glenn (Civil Engineer and Managing Director), Garry (Civil Engineer and Director) and Ian (Planner and Director) have been kicking goals ever since.
Barker Ryan Stewart’s team of skilled professionals have served private developers, publicly listed companies, consultants, builders, and federal, state and local government. The company specialises in the core services of planning, project management, civil engineering, traffic and transport engineering, surveying, strata and subdivision certification (in NSW) and RMS project verification to the infrastructure and property development industry.
Since that initial meeting 10 years ago, the company has expanded from the original Sydney, Central Coast, and Hunter Valley offices into South-East Queensland, with a Brisbane office on the short-term horizon.
“With the opening of our South-East Queensland office, our 10th year began well and excitement has been building ever since,” says Glenn Barker. “We are hoping to make an announcement shortly about acquiring a planning, surveying, civil engineering and project management firm, that will increase our capabilities as a combined group of companies. Barker Ryan Stewart has also been named as a Finalist in the Medium and Making Waves category of the NSW Telstra Business of the Year Awards. A win and entry into the national awards will really be the icing on the cake of a fantastic year for us.”
This year has also seen changes in ownership structure, with two staff members being brought on board as Senior Associates and part owners, with Andrea McDonald taking on the roles of Sydney Manager and Finance Manager and Glenn Jameson taking on the role of Design Manager. Says Glenn Barker, “We are looking towards more staff becoming Associates and part owners in the future. We play as a team and are supportive of each other. We make time for work, family and fun and encourage a healthy work/life balance.”
Looking forward, the company has big plans for the future, including growing its team to approximately 200 people with a revenue of $33 million over the next 10 years, and with 10 offices in the heavily populated areas of NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
“Future expansion will be obtained via both organic growth and through acquisitions across these three states,” says Glenn Barker. “We will also be exploring opportunities to add sustainable/environmental/structural and geotechnical engineering services. During the next 10 years a succession plan will also be put in place which will see an increase in the number of Directors and Associates who will be shareholders of the company and the appointment of a Non-Executive Director to the board.
“Ultimately, our clients and our people are the key to our success. We strive to build strong, genuine relationships and mutual trust between our clients, government officers, consultants and the community through communication and collaboration.”
For the team at Barker Ryan Stewart, kicking goals has become all part of a day’s work.
