A day in the life of an Assistant Project Manager at Barker Ryan Stewart: Adam Sisay

At Barker Ryan Stewart, we’re proud to have a highly motivated and passionate team that works together to deliver infrastructure and create better outcomes for our communities.

Assistant Project Manager

In our ‘day in the life’ blog series, we aim to showcase the work of our talented team and help you get to know the faces behind our projects a little better. This month we sat down with Adam, an Assistant Project Manager in our Sydney office, to chat a bit more about the dynamics of our project management team and his best advice for anyone considering a career in project management.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what interested you in project management.

I enjoy problem-solving, learning and continuous improvement in everything that I do.  Project management fits this mould because it also blends strategic planning and teamwork and it brings people together to achieve common goals for various projects.

What does a typical workday look like for you and what brings you the most enjoyment in your role?

My day often starts with reviewing the project priorities, followed by various meetings to ensure alignment with team members and stakeholders. I usually spend time updating project plans, tracking progress, and addressing any issues that arise. I also ensure that I communicate effectively across projects and provide support where necessary. The most enjoyable aspect of the role is seeing a project come together successfully, collaborating with diverse teams, and the satisfaction of overcoming many challenges!

What’s it like being part of Barker Ryan Stewart’s project management team? Are there any standout projects you’re currently working on?

Being part of BRS’s project management team typically involves many instances of collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to achieving project goals. Our team members often support each other by sharing insights, best practices, and resources, creating a dynamic environment where ideas can flourish.

You could say that generally, no two projects are the same, and that notion is what keeps me on my toes. If I had to pick a standout project, it would be the complex nature of project management relating to the design and construction of a large service centre!

What’s been the most memorable aspect of working at Barker Ryan Stewart so far?

The most memorable aspect of working at BRS so far has been completing a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice. Throughout my study, I was continuously supported by the BRS team, and I do believe it has improved my overall knowledge and perspective of project management.

Looking back at your career, is there anything that has surprised you about working in project management?

As a project manager, I am often surprised by the importance of soft skills in this role. While technical skills and understanding the appropriate methodologies are crucial, the ability to communicate effectively, manage team dynamics, and handle conflicts can be just as vital to a project’s success. Additionally, the constant need for adaptability in an ever-changing environment can sometimes catch you off guard, as projects rarely go exactly as planned.

Finally, what advice do you have for anyone considering a career in project management?

For anyone considering a career in project management, it’s crucial to develop a strong foundation in both technical and soft skills. Start by familiarising yourself with project management methodologies and tools and seek practical experience through small projects or volunteer roles.

Communication, leadership, and adaptability are essential skills that will help you navigate the complexities of managing teams and stakeholders. Networking with professionals in the field can provide valuable insights and mentorship opportunities.

Finally, maintain a mindset of continuous learning, as the industry is always evolving, and staying current will enhance your effectiveness and career prospects. Embrace the challenge and remember that project management is all about delivering value and achieving results!
