In our day in the life of blog series, we aim to showcase the work of our talented team and help you get to know the faces behind our projects a little better.
This month, we sat down with Santosh, one of our Graduate Civil Engineers, to chat about what led him to a career in civil engineering and the biggest highlight of working at Barker Ryan Stewart so far.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what interested you in Civil Engineering?
I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in Nepal and then moved to Australia six years back to pursue a Master of Management for Engineers. Alongside my academic pursuits, I’m passionate about swimming and enjoy exploring new hiking destinations.
My fascination with civil engineering traces back to the influence of my close seniors within this field, as I avidly listened their experiences. From a young age, I found delight in observing the construction of structures and was consistently curious about the technical aspects that brought them to life. This initial fascination turned out to be my career as a civil engineer.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
In my role as a graduate engineer, a typical workday involves tasks like project design (mostly in 12D and DRAINS), analysis and collaboration with team members. Overall, my workday is dynamic, filled with both independent tasks and collaborative efforts to contribute effectively to ongoing projects.
What’s it like being part of Barker Ryan Stewart’s Engineering team? Are there any stand-out projects that you’re currently working on?
It’s been like a great opportunity to be a part of such a supportive team that encourages both personal and professional growth. What I find particularly impressive is the level of mentorship and knowledge-sharing within the team. Seasoned professionals and managers are always ready to provide guidance and support you in need.
I am currently working on Freemans Drive Project, which stands-out for me in terms of unexpected site challenge and opportunity to work on new software MUSIC.
What’s been the most memorable aspect of working at Barker Ryan Stewart so far?
The most memorable aspect being a part of BRS team is the abundance of learning opportunities across various projects, each representing new challenges. The ready availability of senior professionals for mentorship coupled with encouraging environment has truly been a standout experience.
Looking back at your career, is there anything that’s surprised you about being a Civil Engineer?
The specific surprise has been the extent of collaboration required in the execution of a project, no matter what the size of the project. It’s not merely about designing structures in isolation; it’s about integrating expertise from different disciplines to create a complete project outcome.
Finally, what advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Civil Engineering?
For anyone contemplating a career in civil engineering, my advice would be to embrace the dynamic nature of the profession. Civil Engineering is not just about building structures, it’s about solving complex problems and dealing with the unexpected site conditions and intricate design problems. A career in civil engineering is both challenging and rewarding.
