In our ‘day in the life of’ blog series, we aim to showcase the work of our talented team and help you get to know the faces behind our projects a little bit better. This month we sat down with Joel, one of our Senior Civil Engineers and Mid North Coast Manager, to chat a bit more about the most surprising aspect of being an Engineer and why he enjoys being part of our certification team.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what attracted you to becoming an Engineer?
I grew up in Sawtell and have been close to the ocean my whole life. I have always been very practical and analytical and good with numbers. I was never great at English or History at school (which is odd seeing that my dad is an English teacher), so engineering was a natural progression for me!
Walk us through a typical day in your working life. How do you usually start your workday and what are the most enjoyable parts of your day?
I start my workday with a coffee and sit down to make a list of tasks for the day ahead.
What’s it like being part of Barker Ryan Stewart’s certification team?
It is great being a part of the BRS certification team because it allows me to get out in the field and interact with multiple stakeholders and it really gives you a good insight to all aspects of a project from inception all the way through to completion.
What’s been the most memorable aspect of working at Barker Ryan Stewart so far?
The most memorable aspect of working for BRS so far has to be the annual conferences!
Looking back at your career, is there anything that’s surprised you about being an Engineer?
Before starting out in my career I never really knew just how many different types of work an Engineer could be involved in. It really is a great profession where no day is the same as the previous.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to become an Engineer?
DO IT! It is a great career with plenty of variety.
