Development approval has been granted for the construction of the second stage of the Tertiary Education Centre at Muswellbrook, to help support the area’s diversification goals of becoming an innovation intensive region.
The development forms part of the University of Newcastle’s Upper Hunter Precinct and will be developed jointly by the University and Muswellbrook Shire Council.
The new building will be constructed on a prominent site along the main street of Muswellbrook and will be situated between two buildings with State Heritage Significance, Loxton House and Weidman Cottage.
The building will provide flexible laboratory and teaching spaces to help deliver a supportive platform for existing research excellence and innovation. The works will also include the adaptive re-use of Loxton House, with the transformation of the upper level into an innovation hub proving flexible workspace for research.
Part of the development includes the creation of a new covered public space that incorporates the three structures, including the construction of a glazed footbridge to link the two buildings.
Barker Ryan Stewart was engaged by Muswellbrook Shire Council to undertake the planning assessment of the development application for the second stage of the Muswellbrook Tertiary Education Centre.
