In our ‘day in the life’ blog series, we aim to showcase the work of our talented team and help you get to know the faces behind our projects a little better. This month we sat down with Karan, a TfNSW Project Verifier in our Sydney office, to chat a bit more about the dynamics of our TfNSW verification team and his best advice for anyone considering a career in TfNSW Verification.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what interested you in TfNSW PM/Project Verification.
I have been involved with major civil design and verification works on desalination plants, and Road and Rail tunnels; I was involved in the NWRL Viaduct prior to working in as a Project Manager on subdivisions for the last 6 years. I wanted the opportunity to work on WADs that I was involved with or worked on during my previous roles, in a different capacity. BRS provided me the opportunity to work on Major WADs as a Project Verifier.
What does a typical workday look like for you and what brings you the most joy in your role?
A typical day might include site inspections for hold points or witness points on site, reporting and QA in the office, or WFH (opportunity provided by BRS) along with night works inspections. I find the most joy in problem solving or assisting in guiding the contractor to achieve the most efficient and acceptable outcome for any issues encountered on site.
What’s it like being part of Barker Ryan Stewart’s verification team, are there any standout projects you’re currently working on?
BRS has been wonderful in making me feel included form the start, I was invited to the BRS 2024 conference 3 weeks into my start and have enjoyed working with Casey, Garry and the rest of the BRS team.
Since joining our team, what’s been the most memorable aspect of working at Barker Ryan Stewart so far?
The Conference, BRS’s leadership team and their vision and goals. I also found out there is a Wellington in NSW, Australia that is a 4h hour and 35min drive from my accommodation in Sydney – I did this drive a few times in 2024.
Is there anything that’s surprised you about working as a TfNSW PM/Project Verifier?
I hope to enjoy this change and working as TfNSW PV on major WADs, which has been rewarding and educational in the intense few months leading to the end of 2024.
Finally, what advice do you have for anyone considering a career in a TfNSW PM/Project Verification role?
I hope that they bring a positive mentality and will be willing to ask questions and share knowledge within BRS, and with the Clients and Contractors that we work with.
