Townsville City Council engaged Barker Ryan Stewart for a new active transport network as part of the Queensland Government’s Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP). For the 2020 – 2023 period, the investment in Townsville alone exceeds $500 million.
In Northern Queensland, QTRIP intends by 2024 to improve over 1600 km of roads and 500km of rail network. This will cover over 80 000 square kms and will provide transport upgrades for 240 000 Queenslanders.
The new Active Transport Network in Townsville is designed to attract more people and provide better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. Barker Ryan Stewart’s role in the network is along a 2.8km stretch of Hugh Street and Gulliver Street, and we reviewed transport network design plans at the 75%, 85%, and 100% design stages, with the plans including:
- Bicycle lanes
- Shared paths
- Raised Priority Crossings
- Kerbs and ramps
- Signage and pavement markings
- Landscaping elements
- SMART pedestrian crossing
