The Award’s Accelerating Women category recognises small and medium-sized businesses actively challenging exclusion and inequality to create meaningful and lasting equity for women.
The category recognises businesses whose core focus is providing products or services that support and help women, or those who are challenging stereotypes, championing women, developing initiatives to support and progress women, providing career pathways, addressing the gap, and fighting for equity.
BRSare proud to have been recognised in such an important category as it closely aligns with our commitment to becoming a bigger player in the gender equality movement within our historically male dominated industry and creating more equity for women within our team.
Currently, women represent only 3% of Registered Surveyors and 16% of Engineers within our industry, which demonstrates that significant change needs to be made to increase the participation and retention of women within our industry. We see it is our collective responsibility to help close this gap and create meaningful change by encouraging more women to take up these professions as a desirable career path.
As a company, we are fully committed and passionate about diversity, inclusion, and gender equality within our organisation as we strongly believe that having a diverse and inclusive team allows us to create the best workplace possible and is a key determinant to our success.
This belief ensures that we actively explore and implement ways that we can challenge inequality and create meaningful and lasting equity for women within our team. To ensure we achieve this goal, some of the practices we currently undertake include providing flexible and tailored working arrangements, utilising inclusive hiring practices, providing career pathways to leadership positions for women and prioritising internal mobility, offering equal pay and work opportunities, and challenging stereotypes within our industry – just to name a few.
Our CEO and Director, Andrea McDonald, said “We are very proud to be announced as a Telstra Best of Business Awards Finalist in the Accelerating Women category. We have a strong vision underpinned by several future goals to help increase equity for women not only within our company but also our wider industry.”
“Understanding the motivators and barriers to entry and progression within the engineering and surveying professions is a key area to understand as well as reshaping public perception of roles within the property and infrastructure industry.”
“BRS are continually looking for ways to encourage young people to consider a career within the property and infrastructure industry and educating the wider community on how impactful and fulfilling working in our industry can be.”
We would like to congratulate all the other deserving businesses who have been recognised this year. We are proud to be among such an impressive and diverse group of Australian businesses who are accelerating women in their respective fields.

Community
Vibrant, cohesive, sustainable communities with good community design; the provision of community facilities and networks; safe, accessible housing and options for the reduced use of private motor vehicles.
EnviroDevelopment aims to make it easier for purchasers to recognise and choose more environmentally sustainable developments and lifestyles, with each ‘leaf’ demonstrating where the development has exceeded the requirements of the program.
There are a wide range of developments that can be certified under the EnviroDevelopment system, including masterplanned communities, residential subdivisions, seniors living, multi-unit residential, mixed use, industrial, retail, education, health and aged care, and commercial developments.
What are the steps involved in certifying your project?
A thorough application and assessment process is required for all projects certified under the EnviroDevelopment assessment process, to ensure that each development certified is truly sustainable.
The Technical Standards guiding the assessment process have been carefully developed and are refined regularly by an expert panel of ecologists, engineers, town planners, architects, lawyers, and economists. The assessment process ensures that each project’s journey throughout the certification process is smooth, efficient, and connected.

What is the role of EnviroDevelopment Professionals?
EnviroDevelopment professionals carry out a sustainability assessment of the project against the EnviroDevelopment criteria and scoring system.
We work with the developer and design team to explore additional measures or sustainable alternatives to achieve the highest sustainability score and achieve at least 4 leaves.
Once the EnviroDevelopment professional is satisfied that the sustainability aspects of the project meet the criteria to achieve EnviroDevelopment status, a submission is made to the UDIA EnviroDevelopment Board for assessment and formal recognition of the project as achieving EnviroDevelopment status.
What are the benefits of EnviroDevelopment certification?
Aside from the significant environmental benefits, achieving an EnviroDevelopment certification has an array of benefits for home buyers, government and environmental groups, and property developers.
For home buyers and occupiers, an EnviroDevelopment home helps to lower operating costs and provides eligibility for rebates and incentives, as well as ensuring homes, workplaces, and communities are healthier by helping to reduce ecological footprints.
For all levels of government and environmental groups, the EnviroDevelopment system helps to create a more attractive, livable, and sustainable state and region, alongside using resources more efficiently to help facilitate and support a growing population.
For participating developers, an EnviroDevelopment accreditation helps to quantify and communicate their commitment to sustainability by helping to create more sustainable and enhanced developments, alongside the marketing benefits associated with EnviroDevelopment certification.

Environmentally responsible material usage including reuse of materials, recycled materials and consideration of the life cycle environmental costs of materials.
Water
Improved water use through water efficiency mechanisms and / or source substitution such as rainwater and stormwater harvesting.

Our built environment and communities face significant environmental challenges, with the construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings across Australia comprising approximately one quarter of our total greenhouse gas emissions.
To help overcome these challenges, our industry must continue to implement sustainable rating and assessment systems that mitigate the impacts of the built environment through measuring, encouraging, and recognising sustainable development practices.
One such solution is the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) EnviroDevelopment rating system, which independently reviews and certifies property developments with outstanding sustainability performance, to help ensure that the best environmental solutions are implemented today, to create a better tomorrow.
What is EnviroDevelopment?
The UDIA’s EnviroDevelopment certification is a scientifically-based assessment scheme that provides an independent review of developments to award certification to those that achieve outstanding performance across four or more of the six key elements – Ecosystems, Waste, Energy, Materials, Water and Community. These key elements are represented as ‘leaves’:
Ecosystems
Protected and enhanced health and sustainability of natural systems and the encouragement of native biodiversity and rehabilitation of degraded sites.
Waste
Comprehensive waste management procedures and practices to reduce the amount of waste to landfill.
Energy
Reduced production of greenhouse gases and reduced use of fossil fuels. This is achieved through greater efficiencies in energy usage and use of renewable and non-polluting energy sources such as solar power.
Materials
Environmentally responsible material usage including reuse of materials, recycled materials and consideration of the life cycle environmental costs of materials.
Water
Improved water use through water efficiency mechanisms and / or source substitution such as rainwater and stormwater harvesting.
Community
Vibrant, cohesive, sustainable communities with good community design; the provision of community facilities and networks; safe, accessible housing and options for the reduced use of private motor vehicles.

In our ‘A day in the life of’ blog series, we aim to showcase the work of our talented team and help you get to know the faces behind our projects a little bit better. This month we sat down with Russell, one of our Surveyors, to chat a bit more about the journey that led him to becoming a Surveyor, and what he enjoys most about being part of BRS’s survey team.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to becoming a Surveyor.
After leaving school I found myself in a mix of jobs ranging from hospitality, metal roofing, courier driving and at one point I was even on the dole. In my mid-twenties I decided to go to Uni – before I actually chose a degree. After a quick flick through an old careers book I chose surveying, not really sure of what that was or where that career would take me. Fast forward 17 years and now I am on my way (ever so slowly) to becoming a Registered Surveyor. After a few years of fly in fly out niche surveying roles including seismic exploration which took me all over Australia, small details in the Queensland gas fields, and even a brief stint in an open cut coal mine, I settled in at my hometown, had a family, and started in land surveying. I took a brief detour where I thought I wanted a career change and completed a teaching degree but upon completion I thought where do you want to be? In a classroom of wild kids or adventuring in the outdoors – the choice was easy.
Walk us through a typical day in your working life. How do you usually start your workday and what are the most enjoyable parts of your day?
A typical day for me starts with a brief catch up with our survey team in the office discussing current and upcoming jobs. Then it’s time to head out into the countryside and either treasure hunt for survey marks or measure anything from sewer depths to ridgelines of multimillion dollar mansions. Some days we could be up to our necks in swamp drains and others we could be taking in panoramic views of the entire Northern Rivers. The most enjoyable part of my day is adventuring to places I never even knew existed.
What’s it like being part of BRS’s survey team? Are there any standout projects that you’re currently working on?
I would be happy to do almost any job if the people I work with and spend every day with are enjoyable to be around. To me that is the most important part of any career, and I am so grateful to have a team around me who are just great people. No standout projects as most jobs are over a few days after they start but that’s what I love about it – each job and each day brings something new.
What’s been the most memorable aspect of working at BRSso far?
Definitely the conference. A trip to Sydney to sail around on the harbour mixed in with some good food and laughs was something we would never have done before we amalgamated with BRS.
Looking back at your career, is there anything that’s surprised you about being a Surveyor?
I wasn’t quite sure what area of surveying I wanted to pursue but I never thought it would be land surveying, I thought maybe in the mines or large-scale engineering projects. I was told that with a surveying degree under my belt I could work anywhere in the world and that’s what I expected to do. However, I now find myself with a job right on the doorstep of where I grew up that allows me to raise my kids in the part of the world that I love, and I couldn’t be happier.
Finally, what advice do you have for anyone interested in becoming a Surveyor?
Cancel your gym membership, this job will have you walking for days. Surveying is like a treasure hunt with puzzles thrown in to keep you on your toes.
