Women in the Property and Infrastructure Industry: Kim Stamper

In our ‘women in the property and infrastructure industry’ series, we give you a little more insight into the talented women who form an integral part of the BRS team. This blog post features Kim Stamper, who is the Central Coast Manager at BRS.

Describe your career path and how you have progressed to your current role.

With a father that worked as a Civil Contractor and a mother who has a passion for gardening, landscape architecture seemed like a natural career choice for me – a mixture of outdoors, creativity and functionality. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, I participated in a horticulture internship at Disney World Florida, and then went on to work at design firms in Orlando and later in Sydney. The talented design teams I worked with in these locations were inspirational. When my husband was offered an opportunity to work in Hong Kong, I took some time off to start a family.

From there we relocated to Singapore where I continued my career working as a Project Coordinator for a high-end specialty finishes contractor, which meant I was managing the procurement and installation of Italian marble, gold leaf and murals on projects such as Marina Bay Sands Casino and W Hotel. The highlight of working in Asia for me was meeting people from such a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

When life’s adventures brought us back to Australia, I began my career with BRS where I hold my current position as Project Manager and Manager of the Central Coast office.

What does a day in your working life look like?

One of the reasons I like my job so much is the amount of variety I have in my roles on a daily basis. Each day and week bring different opportunities ranging from project management, council and client relations, human resources and general office activities. I try my best to make our work environment on the Central Coast as enjoyable as it can be for all employees, and developing individual relationships is a key aspect that I particularly relish.

What is the favourite part of your role?

Without a doubt, it is the day-to-day discussions and working with the other staff within our office and company wide. This is especially true when we are able to see projects through to their fruition with a successful outcome.

How is your role integral to BRS’ operations?

Beyond the billable hours and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Central Coast office, I like to think that I bring a sense of ease to the office and help others with the day-to-day issues they may be having.

What have been some of the highlights of working at BRS?

I appreciate the level of trust that the firm places in people for making decisions that affect not just them personally, but the company as a whole. The Directors constantly seek input from staff, ensuring that we can give feedback into the direction, goals and values of BRS.

What is one thing that surprised you about working at BRS?

BRS has made an effort to ensure all the employees are supported, both professionally and personally. The Employee Assistance Program allows staff to seek assistance for whatever issues they may be having either in the office or at home. It is clear that BRS truly values the employer, employee relationship which means a tremendous amount.

How has BRS been able to support your career progression?

BRS has allowed me to further my project management accreditation which has proven very beneficial.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?

Beyond spending time with my family, I enjoy staying fit and being outdoors. I can be found at the beach most days, either walking, swimming, or attempting to surf. I also love travelling and experiencing new places, people, music and food.

What are you looking forward to achieving next year?

I am looking forward to continuing to grow with the company and expand my roles. Navigating the issues related to COVID-19 this past year has been challenging and I am hopeful that next year will allow us to move beyond those issues and focus again on doing what we do best.

Paving the Way Forward: Why Developments are Required to Adopt a Green Travel Plan

What is a Green Travel Plan?

A Green Travel Plan is a long-term strategy designed to encourage the use of more sustainable modes of transport rather than just relying on cars.

They are often required for large residential, retail and commercial developments to help alleviate the impact that increased travel demand generated by the development has on the surrounding local road networks and communities.

A Green Travel Plan is developed to be site-specific and identifies how developments can incorporate new infrastructure and utilise the existing infrastructure available to provide the best sustainable transport options.

The Plan generally includes measurable targets and objectives to encourage using sustainable travel modes including walking, cycling, public transport, and car sharing. It can also include the provision of end of trip facilities and electric car charging stations within car parking areas.

The Plan is a dynamic document and should be utilised as part of a process of ongoing review and improvement.

What are the Benefits of a Green Travel Plan?

A Green Travel Plan is a highly valued resource and assists developers to incorporate sustainable initiatives into the design and operation of their development.

Adopting the Plan helps to limit the use of cars, which can provide long-term environmental, social and economic benefits for its users, the developer and also the wider local community. Such benefits include:

  • Helping to meet environmental targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reducing congestion on local road networks
  • Improving the health of local residents from increased exercise through promoting regular walking and cycling
  • Creating less local noise

Our Experience

Our traffic and transport team has been involved in the preparation of Green Travel Plans for a range of residential, retail and commercial developments. Some of the more recent projects we have worked on are listed below.

North West Village, Tallawong

We prepared a Green Travel Plan required for the State Significant Development application for North West Village, a master-planned community located in Sydney’s North West.

The $680 million mixed-use development will include up to 16 buildings, comprising of up to 1,100 residential dwellings, alongside a variety of commercial, retail, and community spaces.

The development is located adjacent to the new Tallawong Station, providing residents access to convenient transport services and other great facilities.

Our Green Travel Plan recommended that a number of sustainable travel initiatives should be incorporated into the design and management of the precinct. Given the site’s proximity to public transport, it was recommended that occupants utilise these networks alongside the pedestrian and cycling facilities available.

Downtown, Zetland

We prepared a Green Travel Plan required for the development application for Downtown, which forms part of the final stage of the Victoria Park precinct located in Zetland.

The mixed-use development will include 546 residential apartments alongside retail and commercial suites. The development will also provide basement parking, associated facilities, and 624 bicycle spaces.

The purpose of our Green Travel Plan was to reduce car ownership by promoting the use of public transport as the primary mode of travel for longer trips and walking and cycling for shorter trips. This included providing initiatives to promote public transport use, a car-pool system, car share system, and promoting walking and cycling as the most effective mode of transport.

Christie Street, St Leonards

We prepared a Green Travel Plan required for the development application for the 36-storey tower development located at Christie Street, in the heart of St Leonards.

This transformative mixed-use development comprises of 239 residential apartments, alongside commercial and retail space. The development will also include an upgrade of Christie Street Reserve, with the proposed design incorporating a through site link.

Our Plan was developed to demonstrate the sustainable transport options unique to the site and provided advice on how to implement these recommendations to encourage future occupants to utilise them.
